    UPS backup referal

I have had good luck with apc units. I am not sure how much power the hub and modem use but I would imagine an average size unit would keep you up for a while. How long were you hoping to be backed up?

    Well it was fun

I have seriously thought about doing this myself, especially when my system went to crap a few weeks back. But what always has me giving the system the benefit of the doubt is the multitude of Gen 1 devices I have. So long as Iris works I just can't justify buying several hundred worth of just door/window sensors to get basic alarm functionality back. But I do know a few people that are on ST and are super happy, one has a highly customized system which is really nice. The only caution I have is to really look at reviews for devices. He has purchased a ton of things that say they are ST compatible but are just garbage. Random alarms, drops etc.

    Contact sensors falling off

I think they must be doing something or rolling something out. Mine started with zwave devices dropping off. Once I got that back zigbee stuff was constantly dropping off. I think it was ok most of the day but between 6-9pm it would constantly think my wife (keyfob) was coming and going so alarm was arming/disarming and lights were going on and off. They wanted me to repair all the affected devices but that would have been every thing. Most of my devices are gen 1 but I saw the same behavior on gen 2 devices and things like leaksmart sensors so mine wasn't isolated. Hope yours settles out soon...it is a real PITA when it gets glitchy. Reminded me of the premature switch to gen 2.

    Contact sensors falling off

I had most of my devices drop off a couple weeks ago. Still not sure what caused it but glad it has been stable again.

    Cover Magnet Issue

Good customer service. Will remember that if/when I decide to automate vents. Always like to support companies that stand behind their products and provide a good service. Unfortunately that isn't that common anymore.
  6. Today I thought some of my devices dropped off the network after moving some things around in my entertainment center. I tried all sorts of fixes to get the zwave devices back but what finally worked was cycling each switch. I checked my device list and all the devices were connected. Then about 30 minutes later a bunch of zigbee devices went offline. Again I can't get them back and opening and closing doors and windows did nothing. But just now I saw the history said my wife just came home but the fob has been here all day. It also has a bunch of other nonsense being listed. Anyone else seeing this?

    Is something going today 1/28?

Well, it has been about a week since I removed the DVD drive but have had the fan running in that time with no dropped devices. I was going to reconnect the drive, but I so rarely use it I decided against it. If for some reason it is causing interference I don't want to deal with the instability for a day or so while it tries to recover. So while not conclusive...if anyone is having some funky connection issues look to see if you have an external DVD drive nearby.

Iris update causes the Gillion's portal to fail

Weird...i had issues with hangouts this afternoon but initially thought it was something going on with my POS machine at work. I will try to remember Monday to investigate more.

Sweet txs! Got this working again, just in time to start messing with some new rules and stuff.

Appears that iris has no presence at CES again

@Smitho I agree with your assessment. I just wish they would open up the platform. I fear if they don't do it soon they will miss the opportunity to have the super users make it better by adding custom device handlers so new/more devices could be used. The longer they wait the more likely those people are going to jump ship. I am really considering a switch to ST for this reason. My friends who have it can use just about and device (minus Iris gen 1) and they can do really slick interfaces. My one buddy is using some cheap fire tablets with action tiles to control everything. Everything is integrated even various IP cams.
  11. I have used a V1 motion sensor outside with no cover but I did caulk it up. But yeah I agree an official outdoor unit would be nice.

Didn't hook up the DVD yet but so far no dropped devices with the fan on. Only oddity was the keypad didn't beep when the alarm was about to go off but did beep later that night when it armed.

Low voltage lightning control with zones

@scunny...you mention you have a smart plug on the input of the transformer then three plugs to relays. So your transformer doesn't have built in controls? Reason I ask was my initial plan was to get a few smaller transformers, one for each zone and have those plugged into a smart plug for control through Iris. But what I am finding is most transformers have built in controls that don't seem to allow control in this way. Searching around I find several posts on various forums saying they needed old school transformers that had the mechanical dials and pulled the switches so it was always on. A few manuals I have downloaded don't seem to allow this. I can do the relays on the output but I was hoping to keep it as simple as possible.
  14. My house has limited outdoor lighting and between a few break ins and now that my little guy is more likely to be out at dark I really want to add some lighting. But I would like to have zones, be smart and preferably integrate with Iris and be platform agnostic. Due to my recent instability I really want to make sure anything I do can move to ST without a total gut job. I have found transformers with app control But I don't think any of these integrate with Iris. So one option I thought of was to have a transformer for each zone and have it plugged into a smart plug for iris to control. Seems like that would work but having several transformers might be bulky but on the flip side I could spread them around and potentially shorten wire runs and make network stronger by spreading repeaters. The other option was to have one large transformer then each zone would be wired to a relay with 120v input from a smart plug. My main concern with this setup is potential for fire. While it is exceptionally low and I would mount all this in an enclosure, if a fire happens I could be left without coverage. So has anyone done something similar? Am I missing any other options?

Low voltage lightning control with zones

Stupid autocorrect on this phone...AC as in 110v. Couple of lights as in 4-5. I am not looking to do stadium lighting, just enough to dissuade an intruder or not be completely be in the dark when playing with my little guy in the backyard.

Low voltage lightning control with zones

That looks nice Vett and thanks for pics of your setup Scunny. I was planning on low voltage only due to budget. We don't have any lights or power run to the areas we need it and I think our panel would then need an upgrade too. My thought was I could do all the work with low voltage and with parts it would be 300-500 bucks. I think A.C. would be more like 2k which seems like a lot for a couple of lights we will barely use.

Low voltage lightning control with zones

Txs...was already planning on LED. I did do a search and may have seen that thread, will have to go back and find it. But thought a repost might bring up newly available parts or ideas. Out of curiosity, did you set up any motion sensors? I have seen motion sensing low voltage lights but I hate when the lights shutoff if you sit still a little. So I was thinking of getting std lights then setting up motion sensors that are only active after say 11pm that would be liked to the smart plugs to turn on a zone if someone approached the house.

    Is something going today 1/28?

System was stable all day yesterday and through the night. No getting awakened by the alarm arming. All devices were still online so I decided to turn the fan in and see if that has any effect. If everything is stable then I will reinstall that DVD drive. If I figure it out I will post what I found.

    Is something going today 1/28?

So last night I ended up pulling the new external DVD drive and turned off the cooling fans. I also plugged a gen 1 plug in between the hub and some of the more troublesome sensors. So far it has been solid with the only devices offline are ones I only use in the summer. Hope it stays like this. If so I am really glad I didn't start repairing everything. I guess the real test will be tonight, it was messing up more frequently after 7.

    Is something going today 1/28?

Wow...what a waste of time. I just spent what seemed like an eternity on the phone with tech support and things are no better. Their only answer is to remove the devices that are not connected and repair them. I don't believe this is a pairing issue since we haven't added, changed or moved an sensors for months and everything was super stable up until last weekend. Also don't believe it is a pairing issue since when I started talking to him only 1 of 16 door/windows switches were connected, after some time most came back and only 6 were offline. If the devices weren't paired they wouldn't have reconnected. Now after another reboot I only have 4 offline. Any other suggestions on troubleshooting? I don't want to bother with repairing, even though it is only a few devices right now since at one point since this weekend I think every device has been offline at some point. I did check my routers 2.4GHz channel and it is 1, so there shouldn't be interference there. Also for giggles I disconnected the DVD drive and shut off the fan. That made no change. While the fan is still mounted; it is only between the hub and one device that is offline. The others are clear with no new obstructions. If this doesn't stabilize I will likely switch to ST. I know it has some issues too but I have a few buddies running it and they are way happier than they were with Wink or Iris. I just have to have this alarm system working, there has been a rash of cars getting broken into and some burglaries. Ugh...in the time it took me to write this all 16 door/window sensors are back online. WTF? I really wish the good web portal was working so I could check signal strength and battery levels. wondering if some batteries are getting low so range is reduced slightly. Not sure that makes sense since they come and go in waves. I don't know...I am tired and frustrated.

    Is something going today 1/28?

cables are all good but I think something might be up with the hub. Last night just after 7 it started to do the same BS with the keyfob coming and going. When I checked a bunch of devices had just dropped off. By morning most of this was gone. But this seems to happen at the same time of day...might be a coincidence but it is weird.

    Is something going today 1/28?

I don't know what to say. As of right now only 4 devices are offline, all gen1 window switches. 2 of the ones offline are in a bank of 4 so I don't think it is range or interference. But since this started after adding that cooling fan and DVD drive I will try yanking that this weekend to see if things stabilize. I did notice this morning the app forced me to sign in again which I thought was strange. Very weird...this system has been stable for about a year now. Sucks that I can't trust it right now.

Did you do this on all devices or just your primary interface?

    Is something going today 1/28?

I am about to pull the plug on this thing. Less than half of my devices are connected tonight. And again the alarm system armed saying my wife left but the keys are still here. Ironically the key fob is one of the few devices that shows as being connected. Getting very fed up, this is actually the worst stability I have seen. Far worse than the gen 2 fiasco.

    Is something going today 1/28?

I guess I spoke to soon. I was sitting by the hub and all of a sudden the alarm is arming. So I check history and it says the key fob departed even though no one left. Then it ran the I'm home scene. I checked the device list and about a half dozen devices were off line. WTF? If this keeps up I may just bite the bullet and switch to ST. I am envious of my buddies setup. So many more options than we have.
